Grown Women Dance: History and Celebration is a documentary film that examines the inspiration and work behind an important and unique dance collective. The Grown Women Dance Collective was founded in 2009 to provide a positive and nurturing environment for mature, female dancers to create beautiful work that is relevant and accessible to diverse audiences. Each year, a group of retired professional dancers from all over the United States gather to produce a show that bridges cultures and generations by honoring the contributions of influential African-Americans. The Grown Women Dance Collective has created a show that introduces concert dance to new audiences and underserved communities, challenging the stereotypes of aging, and celebrating the beauty of diversity.

Our Story

Tonya Amos founded The Grown Women Dance Collective in 2009. Recognizing the continuing desire to perform of her fellow mature professional dancers, she decided to create a forum for these talented women of color to reach across generations and cultures and celebrate the beauty of dance and the value of a shared history. The performances have inspired and educated so many people through the years, and this film is a further expression of that creative spirit. Through film, we will follow the energy, dedication, and work involved in bringing this important performance to so many. The unique experiences and background of these talented artists will also be explored. Blending dance, history and film, the artists involved in this documentary project share a sincere desire to unify.
